TWO DAY TRAIL RIDE
The two-day trail ride comprises two full days of riding through the stunning scenery of the Derbyshire Dales, taking in the Chatsworth and Haddon Hall estates before joining the High Peak trail and heading back onto the hills of the Staffordshire Moorlands and on to Northfield Farm. We no longer organise accommodation for clients but transport them either back to the farm to their vehicles or if they have booked accommodation into Bakewell we will take them to their overnight accommodation.
On arrival at Northfield on the Saturday ( 9.00am) clients are allocated their horses before horses and riders are transported to Priestcliffe, Nr Taddington, where the ride sets off at around 10.15am.
The route follows the old drovers’ tracks through Brushfield Hough, where the views over the surrounding countryside are breathtaking, taking the riders down towards the dramatic viaduct over Monsal Dale. The newly opened tunnel at Monsal Head allows for easier access towards Bakewell following the old train lines to the station where the bridleway wanders up through the woods and over the hill into Endsor, the Chatsworth estate village. Meandering through Endsor village it is a great opportunity to look at the unique houses!
The tea rooms in the village are an ideal lunch break where you can feast on freshly made sandwiches and huge slices of homemade cake.
After lunch a good long gallop up through Chatsworth park takes the ride over the hill, through the woods and into the neighbouring Haddon Estate. After another good gallop across some undulating fields we follow the lane down towards Bakewell where the ride finishes on day one.
If you are staying in Bakewell it has some lovely shops and a variety of bistros worth investigating – but don’t leave town without sampling the traditional Bakewell pudding!
Buxton also has a huge variety of accommodation and is only 4.5 miles from the stables.
Horses and riders are transported back to Northfield Farm on Saturday evening where they can collect their cars to go to their overnight accommodation, we ask that you are back at the stables for 9.15am from where we take you to the mid way point to mount up, in the square at Middleton by Youlgreave, before heading up on to the limestone plateau and then onto the High Peak Trail. Lunch is at the small but popular café at Parsley Hay cycle hire, actually on the trail. The day finishes at the farm around 4.30pm.
We have a variety of horses and usually manage to fit every one with their “type”. The pace of riding is mainly walk and canter/gallop with some trotting. Riders must be capable of staying out of the saddle at canter and generally helping not hindering the horse! As the ride covers in the region of 40 miles over two days of varying terrain a reasonable degree of riding fitness is recommended.
It is essential that we have an accurate assessment of each riders capabilities, also their height and ‘riding’ weight in order to allocate a suitable horse.
All trail rides are accompanied with either one or two guides depending on the number of clients which is usually between 4 and 8.
Self catering accommodation is sometimes available at Northfield Farm or in the village. Buxton is 4.5 miles where there is a good choice of hotels and B&B’s.

We will also be organising ‘away’ days where we box the horses to the start point and ride back to the farm, this gives clients a greater variety of scenery and choice of rides.
